Five Spice Powder is based on ancient Chinese lore that the universe is composed of five elements - wood, metal, water, fire and earth. Ingredients of Five Spice Powder represent those five elements, balanced in the harmonious melding of five flavors - sweet, sour, bitter, pungent and salty.

Traditional Chinese culture held that the elements of civil life had to be balanced in the same harmony as the five elements of the universe. Especially in the preparation of food, the proper fivefold relationship had to be created and maintained.

Our Five Spice Powder is made with the same premium ground spices we sell separately, blended to achieve perfect balance and classic flavor.

This spice blend goes especially well with fatty meats such as duck and pork, and benefits from long cooking times, which allow the balanced, complex flavors to develop.
