HOW TO MAKE FRESH STRAWBERRY PIE WITH JELLO

STEP 1: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar, cornstarch, and water. Whisk until thickened, stirring often.

STEP 2: Remove the pan from the heat, and pour in the strawberry Jello. Stir until it dissolves.

STEP 3: Let the jello mixture cool slightly, then fold in the freshly sliced strawberries.

STEP 4: Pour into the baked crust and refrigerate until the pie filling is set.

STEP 5: Serve with Cool Whip or homemade whipped cream.

HOW LONG DOES STRAWBERRY PIE KEEP ONCE IT’S MADE?

As long as you keep it refrigerated and covered with plastic wrap, it stays fresh for about 3 days. However, the crust may start to get a bit soft as time passes.

Freezing is not recommended due to the texture of the gelatin filling changing when the pie thaws.

FAQ & EXPERT TIPS

Is strawberry gelatin the same as strawberry jello?

Not exactly, but it is very similar. Gelatin, in its natural state, is just about colorless and tasteless. There are forms of gelatin where flavors have been added, that could yield the same results as jello. Keep in mind, Jello is a name brand but there are store brands that make the same type of product.

Can I use gelatin instead of Jello?

If the gelatin is strawberry flavored, then that should not be a problem. However, if you were to substitute regular gelatin, the taste could be off from the lack of sugar and berry flavor.

Are frozen strawberries an option?

No, fresh is best in this case because we are using jello. Even if you were to thaw the strawberries before adding them to the pie filling, they still retain more moisture than fresh berries which would change the texture of the pie and possibly make it runny.

What fruit ruins Jell-O? ›

Some fresh fruits prevent Jell-O and other types of gelatin from gelling. These are fruits that contain high levels of proteases. Proteases are enzymes that break chemical bonds in proteins, such as collagen in gelatin. Pineapple, kiwi, papaya, mango, and guava are examples of fruits that cause a problem.

Will Jell-O set with fruit in it? ›

Avoid fresh pineapple, kiwi, mango, ginger root, papaya, figs or guava. These fruits react with the Jell-O in a way that stops the Jell-O from solidifying, leaving you with a very mushy Jell-O. However, if you use canned pineapple, it doesn't have this effect.

Can Jell-O be substituted for gelatin? ›

What can you use as a substitute for gelatin: Agar Agar, Kudzu, Pectin, Cornstarch, Vegan Jel, Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum, Arrowroot or Tapioca Starch, Instant Clear Gel, and Carrageenan. Each of these options is worth exploring and experimenting with since they do work wonders in many recipes!

Why put butter in pie filling? ›

Some say that scattering small bits of butter over a fruit filling keeps the juices from bubbling over in the same way that adding a bit of fat to simmering jam keeps it from foaming up in the preserving pan. The theory is that the fat disrupts the formation of bubbles on the surface of the viscous fruit mixture.

What thickens fruit pie filling? ›

Cornstarch has thickening power similar to Instant ClearJel. Like flour, it lends a cloudy, semi-transparent look to filling. It can also give filling a starchy taste. For full effectiveness, make sure the pie filling is bubbling up through the crust before removing your pie from the oven.
