How is CBD hashish made? - Cannactiva (2024)

The CBD hashish or legal hashish has become a very popular product. The same methods can be used in its production as with traditional marijuana hash, but it has some particularities with respect to the latter. If you’ve ever wondered how this cannabis resin concentrate is obtained, you’ve come to the right place.

In this post, you will discover the fascinating process of transformation of the CBD flowers into a concentrated product as appreciated as hashish.

What is CBD hashish?

As we mentioned in our hashish guide technically, hashish is an extract of cannabis, which manages to separate the plant material from the trichomes and concentrates the substances present in the buds, such as cannabinoids and terpenes. The result is a product very concentrated in resin, with a potency far superior to that of cannabis flowers.

CBD hashish contains high levels of cannabidiol (CBD) and can be processed in different ways. While traditional marijuana hashish is rich in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it is also rich in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and produces cerebral and euphoric effects, CBD hashish, being rich in the non-psychoactive cannabinoid, produces more bodily and relaxing effects. These effects may vary depending on the variety of cannabis used in the processing and the proportion of cannabinoids present in the final resin.

How to make CBD hashish?

All the traditional methods to obtain hashish can be used to obtain CBD hashish, because only the raw material changes. In other words, CBD hashish is made by simply using the flowers of CBD-rich cannabis strains instead of THC-rich marijuana. From there, it is possible to obtain different products: from the traditional hash plate to Liquid Hash for vaporization with CBD Vape Pen .

CBD hashish processing methods

There are different traditional methods of making hashish. In some cases, the live plant itself is used, in its substrate, before harvesting, or the dried and cured flowers. And although the methods of extraction and manipulation can be diverse, the result will always be the same: compacting the resin of the cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa) on a hash plate. We will now review the traditional and most common ways of resin extraction:

Hashish extraction from dried flowers or buds

This is the most used and widespread method of hashish production in the world, and results from extracting the resin from the already harvested flowers, the marijuana buds. The key to everything is that the flowers, during their handling, naturally release resin, that’s why nowadays many boxes for curing and preserving cannabis come with integrated nets, to store and be able to take advantage of the resin that is released from the buds on its own. But we can also force the release of trichomes ourselves.

There are several tools to extract dry hash, and you can also try to do it at home. For example, with a glass or plastic container covered by a stocking, in which we will introduce the flowers, and that, when shaking upside down, will make the resin fall through the stocking. It would be similar to the powder that concentrates the grinder in its lower tray.

Another option is to use a taut sieve, put the flowers on top and hit the sieve with a stick, to force the resin to be released from the flowers in its swaying (the result is what is known as “apaleado”, very popular in Morocco). Finally, there are machines with a motorized drum, such as the Pollinator, which perform the task mechanically.

Hashish extraction with ice

Ice and water can also be used to extract the resin glands from the buds. The basis of the technique is that flowers (plant matter) and trichomes react differently in water and therefore it is relatively easy to separate the resin by soaking the buds.

The problem with this is that, when it gets wet, the resin softens, and once out of the water it creates a mass that makes its handling and subsequent extraction of the hashish very complicated. For this reason, ice is used in the water, the method known as Ice-O-lator, to make these trichomes harden and not soften. The inventor of this method was Mila Jansen, The Queen of Hashish of whom we spoke on one occasion.

Thus, using meshes of different micronages, submerged in containers with water and ice, we will achieve that the resin is filtered in a simple way and we will obtain our hash. This method can be done at home, with a bucket, water, ice and nets, or we can buy in specialized stores Bubbleator washing machines prepared for the task.

A variant of this technique is to use dry ice, without water, a method that causes the trichomes to become very brittle and separate easily, filtering through the mesh.

Hashish extractions using solvents

Finally, there are the methods of resin extraction with solvents. These solvents are substances, usually gases, but also alcohol or oils, that help to dissolve the trichomes, to be able to treat them later and form the hashish.

For example, butane and other gases can be used to create the well-known hashish BHO (Butane Hash Oil) and its variants(Shatter, Sugar, Wax…). The problem with these gases is that they are toxic and if the result is not properly purged, residues may remain in the hashish. They are also dangerous methods, because the gases are flammable. Also, although the result is not properly hashish, the resin can be extracted in the form of tinctures, with alcohol, or oils, with olive oil.

Extraction of hashish from the live plant

It is the most primitive extraction method, very popular in the regions of India or Pakistan. The result is often referred to as charas hashish. The process is as basic and simple as rubbing the buds of the plants with your hands until the resin sticks to your fingers. Then, simply remove it from your hands and compact it.

There are several issues to consider in this technique. First, choose the right time to do this rubbing, because if it is done too early the resin will still be “raw” and its effect will be very weak. Next, that it is a painstaking and unproductive process. To extract one gram of hash will require approximately one hour of rubbing. And finally, although the quality of the resulting hashish will be optimal, it is a technique that can be aggressive with the plant, and rubbing can degrade the buds. Therefore, it is usually done a couple of weeks before harvest, to let the plant regenerate the lost resin.

Nowadays, mechanized processes have been developed by which it is possible to achieve a similar result, but obviously not the same as the original, due to its purely handmade nature.

Some of the extracts are used, together with kief (pollen), to make Moonrocks, flowers dipped in extract and coated with pollen.

Special Processes in Legal CBD Hashish

A particularity of CBD hashish is that its THC concentration can be higher than that of hemp flowers, thus exceeding the legal limits allowed for its sale. Therefore, at the end of the process, it undergoes a cannabinoid analysis, which certifies that it maintains THC levels within the legal limit of less than 0.2%. If it exceeds them, it is necessary to pass that hash through an additional process.

We come to the end of this journey through the different methods of hashish elaboration. We hope you enjoyed it, although, undoubtedly, the greatest satisfaction is to see the result 😉 We invite you to experience the sensations of the most relaxing hashish from the hand of Cannactiva.
