CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - One of two men convicted of killing a 21-year-old man after arranging to purchase his pickup truck through Craigslist has been sentenced to life without parole.
Jquan Scott was sentenced on Wednesday for the October 2013 murder of William "Alex" Apps. Investigators say Scott fatally shot Apps during a test drive of Apps' vehicle over the Ravenel bridge.
Isaac Rommel Williams, who has also been convicted of murder,was sentenced to 40 years in prison. During the sentencing hearing,Williams apologized to the Apps family and told them he was changed man.
Earlier in the day, Scott's defense attorney had asked for mercyand the minimum 30 year sentence for his client.
According to Scott's attorney, his client has no prior record and is accepting responsibility. Scott, who was 19 at the time of the murder, apologized to the Apps family and his own familyin court, and asked for forgiveness.
Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said Apps' death was a planned execution.Wilson said Scott fooled his family and is a "silver-tongued devil."
According to Wilson, both Scott and Williams had no remorse and only cared about using Apps' credit cards which they used in Beaufort.
Apps' mother, who met both of the suspects prior to her son's murder, also spoke in court and said her son "was a very special person, a loving man," and does not believe Scott and Williams have accepted responsibilityfor their crimes. She said Scott and Williams shook her hand "knowing they were going to kill my son."
Officials with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office say Apps was trying to sell his 2006 Chevrolet truck on Craigslist in 2013. Scott and Williamsresponded to thead.
Apps thenmet the two men at a Hardees on Spring Street in downtown Charleston.
"The victim's mother was also present in a separate vehicle," Cannon said in 2013."The victim advised her to go on and that the sale was not going to occur at that time. That he was going to take the two individuals back to their home."
According to Cannon, shortly after the victim and the suspects left Hardees, they went over the Ravenel Bridge where Apps was shot and killed; authorities say Scott shot Apps in the head during a test drive over the bridge.
Cannon said the suspects then dragged Apps' body in a wooded area off of Magrath Darby Boulevard.
Scott then drove Apps' truck to USC Beaufort to party with friends after the shooting, deputies say.
After he was caught, Cannon said Scott led authorities to Apps' body.
Court records state Scott voluntarily admitted that he met with Apps, and voluntarily escorted detectives to the scene where the victim's body was dumped.
Beaufort County deputies were led to Scott after discovering the victim's debit card was used at location in Bluffton on October 4, one day after he went missing.
Phone records showed Scott was one of the last people to be in contact with Apps before his disappearance.
According to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, Scott met with deputies on Sunday and claimed he purchased the truck from Apps, but Apps did not have the title at the time. Scott went on to say Apps gave him his debit card as collateral until the deal could be finalized.
Beaufort County deputies then made contact with Charleston County deputies, believing that was Apps' last known location.
