There are two ways to connect a domain you purchased outside of Wix (i.e. from another domain host). Depending on where you want to store your DNS (Domain Name Systems) records, choose the method that suits you:
- Name servers (recommended):Wix hosts your DNS (Domain Name Systems) records, so you can manage them directly from your account.
- Pointing:Your domain host stores your DNS records on their platform.
Tip: Alternatively, instead of connecting your domain, you can transfer your domain entirely to Wix if you'd like to pay for your domain's registration and manage your DNS with Wix. Learn more about the difference between transferring vs. connecting your domain.
Using the name servers connection method
In the name servers method, your domain's DNS records are hosted by Wix. We recommend connecting your domain to Wix via name servers, as you can manage your DNS records in your Wix account.

Business emails
If you have a custom domain business email (e.g., sales@mydomain.com), your domain's DNS must include your email provider's records (e.g., MX, A, CNAME, TXT records). When you connect via name servers, make sure your email provider's required DNS records are added in your Wix account. Wix automatically adds your domain's existing MX records when you connect via name servers. However, some email providers require you to add additional records (such as CNAME or TXT records). In these cases, you'll need to add the DNS records manually in your Wix account. Note: Microsoft Office 365 business emails (which are offered by GoDaddy and some other domain hosts) require you to add several custom DNS records with your DNS host. If your domain has working Office 365 business emails, you can avoid re-adding DNS records in your Wix account if you connect by pointing.
Existing DNS records
If you have existing DNS records you'd like to continue using, you'll need to add them in Wix when you connect via name servers. Subdomains and verification records are examples of services that need DNS records to work.
Wix features requiring a name servers connection
You must connect your domain via name servers to use the following features:
Note: Domains purchased from Wix or transferred to Wix are automatically connected by name servers.
Using the pointing connection method
In the pointing method, your domain is connected to your Wix site, but your domain's DNS records stay with your domain's host. This means you must contact the domain host if you're experiencing any issues with your DNS records.

What should I consider when using the pointing method?
We do not recommend pointing because we're unable to assist you in another DNS host's account. However, if your domain has complicated DNS records that you prefer not to reconfigure, pointing may be your best option. Learn how to connect your domain via pointing.
Business emails
When connecting via pointing, you don't change any of the DNS records that affect your domain's business emails. Consider pointing if you want to avoid having to add your email provider's DNS records in your Wix account.
Other DNS services
When connecting via pointing, you're only changing the DNS records used to display your website. Other services that depend on DNS such as email, subdomains, and verification records remain unchanged. Consider pointing if you have many DNS dependent services you'd prefer to not have to reconfigure.
Keep in mind:
FAQs
How long does it take for my domain to fully connect (propagate)?
It can take up to 48 hours for the domain connect to complete.
What's the main difference between name servers and pointing?
The difference between connecting via pointing or name servers is difference in who manages your DNS. If you connect your domain via nameservers, you manage your DNS records from your Wix account. If you choose to connect your domain via pointing, you continue to manage your DNS records at your domain host.
Can Wix help with domain issues if it's connected via pointing?
No. We do not recommend pointing because we're unable to assist you in another DNS host's account.
