CLOUDY CLOUDY Frost warning in effect tonight From Staff and AP Reports A high pressure system moving eastward across the region will bring dropping temperatures tonight, with lows in the 30s over much of the state and 20s in the mountains, the National Weather Service said.

The weather service has issued frost and freeze warning for central and western sections of North Carolina for tonight. At the coast, temperatures in the 40s overnight will prevent the formation of frost there, forecasters said. Meanwhile, the low pressure system which brought rain to the state Thursday and overnight moved north to the Virginia coastline today. The low brought around an inch of rain to eastern North Carolina and only light amounts to the west. Fair weather will prevail on Saturday as the high pressure system moves eastward to a position along the eastern seaboard.

The highs will be on the cool side with most areas seeing temperatures in the 50s. Across the nation, snow blanketed parts of the Midwest early today, while rain dampened the East. Scattered snow showers were expected today in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where snow plowing crews in some areas were busy Thursday clearing away up to 36 inches of snow that has fallen since Tuesday. The Hurley area of northwestern Wisconsin has received 35 inches of snow since Wednesday. Temperatures dipped to the teens in Minneapolis early today, while snow fell in North Dakota.

Rain dampened Pennsylvania and parts of New York. On Thursday, showers were scattered across the Southeast and the middle Atlantic Coast states. Thunderstorms rumbled over eastern South Carolina and along the east coast of Florida. The nation's high temperature Thursday was 90 degrees at Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Other reports at 3 a.m.
