(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Rotimi Kukoyi, a health policy & management student at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill from Hoover, Alabama
Today's Final Jeopardy - Friday, January 12, 2024 (1)
Long Nguyen, a retired engineer from Las Vegas, Nevada
Today's Final Jeopardy - Friday, January 12, 2024 (2)
Roy Camara, a grocery specialist from Crawfordsville, Florida
Today's Final Jeopardy - Friday, January 12, 2024 (3)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Our latest two-game total point final is between our three semifinal winners, Rotimi Kukoyi, Roy Camara, and Long Nguyen. Of our three players, Roy seemed to have immediately figured out the timing on the signaling device and came back from an early Daily Double miss to nearly take a runaway game in the semifinal! Interestingly, Rotimi (at 77%) had an even better time on the signaling device than Roy (at 70%) did! Long, however, was in just 47% of the time. In terms of semifinal attempts, though, Long leads that battle with 47, Roy 43, and Rotimi 26. I get the sense that this is going to be a very interesting final!

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

As a result of massive North Sea flooding in the northern Netherlands in 1170 (the All Saints’ Flood), the general geography of the northern area of the country changed. The Amstel River basically got an open connection to the sea nearly overnight, and habitation in the area began. A dam on the river was constructed in the 1260s and 1270s, leading to the name Amsterdam (“dam on the river Amstel”) being given as a name to the settlement located there.

This is one of those “Oh, but of course!” Final Jeopardy clues where you’ll realize how you’re supposed to get to the answer once you do. It might be a challenge to get there within 30 seconds; we’ll see if anybody does!

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Historic American Women; Book Titles; Flags; Podcasts; A Seasoned Film; We Have Oxy, Give Us The Moron)

Roy was cruising—and then he got a five-figure Daily Double incorrect. This brought Long into the lead! Long then strengthened his lead with a True Daily Double himself! This gave Long a big lead going into Final Jeopardy.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Long 17 correct 5 incorrect
Rotimi 9 correct 1 incorrect
Roy 20 correct 7 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Rotimi $4,600
Roy $1,600

All three players bet the farm in this Final—and only Long was correct. His chances in this one 100% paid off and he has a commanding lead going into Monday! Long, more than anyone, knows that absolutely anything can happen, though, on Monday! Long has an “effective lead” of $18,400 on both Roy and Rotimi (as anything earned Monday in the main game can be doubled in Final Jeopardy).

Tonight’s results:

Roy $1,600 – $1,600 = $0 (What is the Seine?)
Rotimi $4,600 – $4,600 = $0 (What is the Volga?)
Long $18,400 + $18,400 = $36,800 (What is the Amstel River?)
