He decorated the boxes using drawings of his family and Alpine scenes. In 1861, he created the first heart-shaped box of chocolates designed specifically for Valentine’s Day.

Although conversation hearts didn’t become associated with Valentine’s Day until nearly 40 years after heart-shaped boxes of chocolates, this sweet staple earns its place on the list of best-selling Valentine’s Day candy.
