Did Bed Bath & Beyond go out of business? ›

All of Bed Bath & Beyond's physical stores are permanently closed. Bed Bath & Beyond's website relaunched Tuesday under its new owner, Overstock.com, breathing new life to the iconic home goods retailer declared bankrupt earlier this year.

Bed Bath & Beyond's stores have officially shuttered but customers can still shop the brand through its relaunched website and app. Overstock acquired Bed Bath's intellectual property and ditched its own name in a bid to boost sales, acquire new customers and cement itself as a go-to home goods retailer.

Sadly, all of the Bed Bath & Beyond stores have officially closed, but the home brand lives on — thanks to Overstock, which has recently taken over the name. Overstock acquired the bankrupt brand back in June, and now, the two brands have been merged into one online shopping platform.

Vacant Bed Bath & Beyond locations have been scooped up by a variety of retailers, including Hobby Lobby, since the chain went out of business. Burlington Stores, the off-price apparel seller, has leased a number of those sites, as have crafts seller Michaels and HomeGoods.

It's official — Overstock has rebranded as Bed Bath & Beyond, bringing the two iconic brands together to create an ultimate home shopping destination. Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy earlier this year and Overstock acquired some of its assets back in June at an auction.

On Tuesday, Overstock's website relaunched as BedBathandBeyond.com, a move that merges Overstock's online business model and merchandise categories with popular branded products favored by Bed Bath & Beyond shoppers.

In a June 2023 bankruptcy auction, Overstock.com acquired the Bed Bath & Beyond name, and associated intellectual property, in a $21.5 million stalking-horse bid. Shortly thereafter, Overstock publicly announced its intention to rebrand its own operations under the Bed Bath & Beyond name after the acquisition closes.

Nearly half of Bed Bath and Beyond's products are out of stock as the retailer nears bankruptcy. Bed Bath & Beyond had 53% of inventory available for customers in December 2022, per DataWave. Supply chain issues and issues paying suppliers have created the inventory problem, analysts say.

Overstock paid $21 million for Bed Bath & Beyond's brand back in June after the company filed for bankruptcy in April.
