Turkey Yield Calculator - Calculator Academy (2024)

Enter the total weight and leftover weight into the calculator to determine the turkey yield. This calculator can also evaluate any of the variables given the others are known.

Turkey Yield Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the yield of a turkey.

TY = (TW - LW) / TW * 100

Variables:

  • TY is the Turkey Yield (%)
  • TW is the Total Weight of the turkey before cooking (lbs)
  • LW is the Leftover Weight of the turkey after cooking (lbs)

To calculate the turkey yield, subtract the leftover weight of the turkey after cooking from the total weight of the turkey before cooking. Then divide the result by the total weight of the turkey before cooking. Multiply the quotient by 100 to get the turkey yield in percentage.

What is a Turkey Yield?

A turkey yield refers to the amount of meat that is obtained from a turkey after it has been processed. This includes removing the feathers, internal organs, head, and feet. The yield can vary depending on the size and breed of the turkey, as well as the method of processing. It is usually expressed as a percentage of the live weight of the turkey. For example, a turkey with a live weight of 20 pounds may yield 12 pounds of meat, which would be a yield of 60%.

How to Calculate Turkey Yield?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Turkey Yield.

  1. First, determine the Total Weight of the turkey before cooking (TW) in pounds.
  2. Next, determine the Leftover Weight of the turkey after cooking (LW) in pounds.
  3. Next, use the formula TY = (TW – LW) / TW * 100 to calculate the Turkey Yield.
  4. Finally, calculate the Turkey Yield as a percentage.
  5. After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem :

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

Total Weight of the turkey before cooking (TW) = 15 lbs

Leftover Weight of the turkey after cooking (LW) = 10 lbs
